Egg Creams – They have neither egg, nor cream. Discuss.

 I was tickled to see Bon Appetit’s  recent highlight of the misunderstood egg cream soda fountain classic (and check out their fun stop motion image). The drink so rarely appears on menus that it seems most people skim over the words, assuming it’s some heavy, gross, egg-based concoction.  Even my mother, who speaks fondly of cherry phosphates from her childhood neighborhood drugstore, wasn’t entirely clear on the drink’s components until recently.

So what’s an egg cream?  It’s milk, soda water, and flavored syrup (not just chocolate as per Bon Appetit).  I order them regularly at soda fountain establishments like Fountain on Locust and Dr. Jazz in Webster Groves.  An egg cream sits somewhere between a phosphate/soda and a milk shake – it gives me a creamy, fizzy hit of deliciousness without being excessive.  At Dr. Jazz they’ll let you go half and half on flavors.  A strawberry and dark cherry combo is my fave.

    hee hee hee Bon Appetit called it a “stop motion” instead of a gif. Quaint.
